Aczone is a prescription only acne gel that uses a 5% concentration of dapsone. They claim it is effective in the treatment of mild to moderate acne, and it uses SMP technology. In other words, they say it can reduce your acne related lesions in as little as 2 weeks. It does not stain or bleach clothes, it is not the common benzoyl peroxide, and you can use it on the whole body.
But, as always, it can of course be difficult to get a prescription, and there are reasons why as a prescription, no other over the counter products have chosen to use dapsone. For those considered safe enough for the general market, there have been over the counter versions. 2 weeks is a long time to wait, especially considering some of the newest innovations in the over the counter industry, and though it is not technically benzoyl peroxide, it does cause side effects such as dryness, redness, oiliness, and peeling just like benzoyl peroxide. In an orally administered pill, it has also been known to lead to the breakdown of red blood cells.
In short, Aczone is available in prescription form only for a reason. It still costs quite a bit, it still causes unnecessary and certainly undesirable side effects, and 2 weeks is still a long time to wait, when some individuals have to wait longer to see any kinds of results. In addition, unlike other over the counter options, you cannot combine it with other things if you are not seeing results. Combining it with benzoyl peroxide would cause skin to literally turn yellow. We would not suggest this particular product.
